“Be Right On” Photos from my time in Brighton.
From 2005 until 2013, the funky seaside town of Brighton was my home. It’s a pretty full-on, eccentric place, with a lot going on, and I lived right in the thick of it, initially next to the crumbling West Pier, then on the edge of hedonistic Kemptown.
I was 23 when I moved there, fresh from uni and unsure what to do. But it’s where I cut my teeth as a photographer, made the transition from film to digital and began my career as a professional photographer.
I immersed myself in all the culture and events on offer, and there was a lot! I worked for local magazines and was always buzzing around town on my bike with my camera bag on my back, photographing editorial pieces or events. Brighton is a dizzying eclectic cultural mix, specialising in hen nights, rowdy tourists, hipsters galore, punks, rockabillies, hippies, junglists, political party conferences, weddings, ravers, witches and a vibrant gay scene. It seems everyone there is either a musician, artist, photographer or some kind of performer, so it’s an amazingly creative place and served as the perfect ground to inspire my early photography career.
I took so many pictures of Brighton life in my 8 years there and I have compiled them into the personal project “Be Right On”. Below is a selection of some images that didn’t make the cut, but I thought would serve as some fun bonus content, enjoy!
And next time you want an eccentric night out by the seaside, hop on the train to Brighton.
